Sue Thompson Memorial Awards 2022
The Sue Thompson Memorial Awards are to recognise the excellence and dedication our learners show towards their CIPD qualifications. It was introduced in memory of our colleague, and friend, Sue Thompson. Sue was a long-standing Chartered Fellow and a huge advocate for the CIPD, she was Branch Secretary of the Black Country CIPD branch for over 20 years and a trainer here at Crosby.
Sue’s unwavering passion and pride at seeing people succeed in their qualifications was such a strong motivation for her that she continued to do her best for her students right up to the final few days of her life.
Sue would have been so proud to see all the students Crosby has taught and helped grow in their careers and knowledge and this year’s three winners that have been judged to have gone that extra mile in their studies rendering them worthy recipients of these awards.
Congratulations to the 2022 winners!
Emily Sparks, HR Level 5 Winner
Daniel Sadek, HR Level 3 Winner
Kate Weir, L&D Winner
Emily, Dan and Kate were awarded with a trophy, certificate, and cheque for £100.

Ofsted gets more funding to inspect all schools by 2025.
–
Covid started, schools suffered. It’s not an unknown issue that our schools were majorly impacted since March 2020, and with that, so were our children.
To ensure all schools, and pupils, get back on track the government have given a funding boost of £23million into the Ofsted inspection programme, meaning all schools are to be inspected by the summer of 2025.
500,000 teacher training and development opportunities by 2024.
–
The recent school years have been tricky, the ordinary role of a “teacher” changed over night, and the increased challenges to teaching skyrocketed.
Which is why, along with more up to date Ofsted visits, 500,000 teacher training opportunities will be given by 2024. Not only that, the Department for Education also announced schools to be open for a minimum of 32.5 hours a week.

Are older employees missing out due to technology?
–
In a study performed by the Lancaster University it shows that older people are wary of new technology innovation. Mainly by fear of making mistakes or finding the new equipment time-consuming and overly challenging.
However, technology can help enhance their professional abilities and “keep a step within the times”. Do you think more help should be given to those struggling to adapt to new tech?
Is “collecting data” a waste of time?
–
In a study conducted by XpertHR, they revealed 67% of organisations aren’t currently gathering enough meaningful data to measure the HR performance within their business.
They argue spending more time researching and obtaining quality data will lead to your HR position being reinforced within the organisation and allowing senior members to clearly see the value you’re adding to the business.
Only 9% of HR professionals in the study collected on the metrics of “Time to Competence Data” even though this is fundamental to an effective recruitment and retention strategy.
Are you collecting the right data?
Butchery, Retail & Food
It’s without a doubt that everyone is starting to feel a little hit of price increases. Whether it’s the increased price of a pint at your local pub, or the tightening of your gas and electric usage, the majority of us, may feel it.
The meat industry has by far felt this hit.
The price increase on deadweight animals is becoming increasingly worrying, not only for our butchers, but customers too.
I got first hand feedback from our butchers and meat industry experts on where they feel the industry is heading – read the full article below.
The youngest female to pass as a Level 2 Butcher

At just 17 years old Millie has successfully passed her Level 2 Butcher Apprenticeship and will be shortly moving onto her Level 3 Advanced Butcher.
She said: “Seeing people like Margaret Boanas, Master of the Worshipful Company of Butchers, so high up in the industry is so encouraging, especially when the industry is so male dominated.”

Welcoming our new trainers to the Aviation, Leadership & Management Department!
–
In February we introduced Nick, our new Leadership and Management Trainer. Nick will mostly be working with our Level 5 Operations/Departmental Manager apprentices alongside Gemma.

A Shining Light Through Dark Clouds
–
The impact of Covid-19 has been difficult on lots of apprentices journeys, especially our Aviation apprentices, with lots being made redundant, put on furlough or found it difficult to sustain their jobs in the aviation industry.
Tom Frankland, a Level 3 Aviation Ground Specialist apprentice, working within the operations control centre at Jet2, is an exceptional example of how to overcome the challenges through lockdown and come back to learning after a long pause, and then going
on to achieve a Merit in his apprenticeship End Point Assessment.

First-generation professionals need attention!
–
Do you know what a first-generation professional is?
A first-generation professional (FGP) is someone who is the first in their family to hold a professional, white-collar job. They often come from diverse backgrounds, and recent studies have shown that they tend to to feel less valued and included at work than those with deeper roots in the professional world.
This article from the CMI talks about how we need to include their needs as leaders and managers. Have you read it?
